Yazd is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Iran, which is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage City. Its silhouette is punctuated by minarets and ingeniously designed wind towers that capture desert breezes to cool homes during the hot summer months. Yazd is also the center of Iran’s Zoroastrian community, which is where you’ll begin the day’s sightseeing.

At the Tower of Silence, we’ll learn about one of the traditions of this ancient pre-Islamic religion. Until the mid-1900s, the dead were transported to this tower where they were left to decompose and be devoured by birds. Zoroastrian tradition considers a deceased body to be “unclean” and this process of excarnation prevents contact with either fire or earth– both of which are considered to be sacred.

At the still-active Zoroastrian Fire Temple, we’ll see a flame that is said to have been burning for the past 1,500 years. It’s an important pilgrimage site for the faithful and here our expert guide will offer additional insight into one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions.

In Amir Chakhmaq Square, we’ll see a very impressive Hussainiya– a congregation hall for Shia commemoration ceremonies. With three tiers of recessed alcoves, all perfectly proportioned, its façade is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks.

Next is the Jame Mosque of Yazd. Beside is the famous old brick district of Fahadan. There, we will stroll in the region and get to know how the people of Yazd used to live for hundreds of years (a walking tour takes around 2 hours).

Among the many other historic sites to be seen in Yazd are beautiful old homes and the Dowlat Abad Garden (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Standing by the garden’s long reflecting pool, you’ll be shaded by ancient cypress trees. Ahead of you is an 18th-century hexagonal pavilion with a beautiful stained glass window and a graceful wind tower– the tallest in Iran. All around are flowering fruit trees and other ornamental plants and trees.

ACCOMMODATION

  • Laleh 3-star hotel or a similar one in Yazd

After breakfast, we will head to the desert expedition. Our first stop will be at the ancient village of Kharanagh. Known for its well-preserved mud-brick architecture, historical structures, and rich cultural heritage. The village features a centuries-old Castle, a traditional Mosque, an ancient Caravanserai, and a Qanat (an underground water channel) system that once provided water for irrigation and daily needs.

Continue to Khor Biabanak. It is one of the largest deserts in the country and covers a significant portion of the central Iranian plateau. Khor Biabanak is characterized by its expansive dunes, arid landscapes, and extreme climate. The desert is sparsely populated, with a few nomadic tribes residing in the area. Visitors to Khor Biabanak can experience the raw beauty of the desert, go on adventurous desert safaris, witness stunning sunsets and stargazing, and immerse themselves in the tranquility and solitude of this vast natural expanse.

ACCOMMODATION

  • Bali Desert Hotel or a similar one in Khor
  • Included Meals: Breakfasts

Khor Biabanak is located in the central desert of Iran. There are several small villages in the area, and each of them has its attractions, such as the only salt waterfall in the world or a safari and sunset in the Village of Mesr. Today is the best time to walk around an Iranian village and experience how the villagers live.

After leaving the desert behind us, we will make our first stop this morning in the small town of Naein, an ancient community whose origins date back to the 8th century. We will visit the Jame Mosque of Naien. The mosque is the third oldest mosque in Iran after the Arab invasion. The calligraphy and brickwork of this mosque are among the most outstanding in Iran.

Then we will continue to Isfahan.

Today’s exploration begins in the Chehel Sotun Palace (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Set in a landscaped and forested park in front of a tranquil reflecting pool, this graceful pavilion was built by Shah Abbas II for entertainment and court receptions.

Next up is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naghsh-e Jahan Square (Royal Square). This 17th-century site is one of the largest public spaces in the world. Here in the square, we’ll visit the 17th-century Shah Mosque, revered as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and easily recognized by its magnificent tile-work and soaring cupola and minarets. We will also visit Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, also known as the Royal Mosque, as it was built for the Shah’s harem, renowned for its brightly colored domed ceiling, where the light creates the image of a peacock. In the Ali Qapu Palace, we’ll marvel at its beautiful music rooms and the balconies where Safavid kings would sit to enjoy the polo matches unfolding in the square below. We’ll end our exploration of the square by visiting the Qeisarieh Bazaar. With hundreds of local vendors that specialize in traditional arts and crafts, it’s a wonderful place to shop for pottery, enamel, jewelry, and delicately inlaid board games.

ACCOMMODATION

  • Traditional 3-star hotel or a similar one in Isfahan
  • Included Meals: Breakfasts

We will continue our exploration in Isfahan at another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Simple at first glance but wondrous in its rich detail and bold design, the Masjed-e Jamé is another masterpiece of Iranian architecture, covering nearly 5 acres in the heart of this historical city. This is one of the oldest congregational mosques in the country, and its construction and embellishment over the past twelve centuries illustrate several important periods in Islamic architecture.

Later, in the Armenian quarter of the city, we delve deeper into the complex history of the region by visiting the 17th-century Vank Cathedral with its richly decorated interior and unique blend of Islamic and European architectural elements.

Just a few steps away is the Music Museum of Isfahan, where we can admire Iran’s national and local musical instruments, with some musicians playing traditional Iranian music most of the time.

At the end of our exploration tour of Isfahan, we visit two of Iran’s most beautiful historical bridges in Isfahan. Si-o se pol and Khajoo. Most visitors from all over the world in the 16th and 17th centuries believed that there were no more beautiful bridges in the world than these two.

ACCOMMODATION

  • Traditional 3-star hotel or a similar one in Isfahan
  • Included Meals: Breakfasts

Our overland journey continues to Abyaneh Village. Abyaneh Village is known as the Red Village because of its red soil and houses. The houses of Abyaneh bear an ancient architectural style, featuring the use of clay as the construction material and latticed windows and wooden doors.

We then drive to Kashan, a city originally known for its textiles, rose water, and ceramic production.

Our first stop is the Fin Garden (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a relaxing and visually stunning Persian garden with water channels all leading through a central pavilion. The garden was the abode of the Safavid kings when they were hunting outside Isfahan.

Next, we visit the two most beautiful historical houses in Iran. The Tabatabaei and Boroujerdi Houses. These two houses were built about 130 years ago during the reign of the Qajar dynasty (1857). These two houses are the best examples of the architecture of Iranian houses.

Then we visit the bathhouse of Sultan Amir Ahmad. Because of its breathtaking architecture, it is also known as the bride of Iran’s bathhouses.

    All fine

All fine. Good communication in the setup. The visas, payment, and flights etc went smoothly.
The most important aspect of a tour is the guide and Nima excelled. A great networker with sophisticated English he understands his mainly western audience well and does in depth historical research for his own interest.

    Iran adventure

Iran is an amazing country and so glad that I went for it!
Stunning architectures, rich history, friendly & helpful people. Surprisingly, very safe too.
Before signing up for the 9 days tour, I had contacted Saye and made tons of queries. She responded promptly and addressed all my queries in detail. Saye is very friendly and customer focused.
