Also known as a <em>kariz<\/em>, it connects a water source on higher ground with fields and settlements below. The visible line of shafts marks a much larger structure hidden beneath the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding a qanat means looking beyond its tunnel. Excavation, maintenance and agreements over water all contribute to the system. Water seeps into the channel and travels along a gentle gradient until it emerges at the outlet. From there, surface channels distribute it to the land it serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>mother well<\/strong> helps establish the depth of the water source. Other vertical shafts connect the tunnel to the surface, providing access for excavation and repairs. It must allow water to flow without causing excessive erosion. Work can include removing sediment, repairing collapsed sections and reinforcing unstable ground. Its output depends on the groundwater available to it. Seasonal recharge, drought, competing withdrawals and the condition of the channel can all affect its flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, gravity-fed transport is not a guarantee of unlimited supply. A falling water table can reduce or stop the discharge. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranicaonline.org\/articles\/kariz_3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iranica\u2019s discussion of water supply<\/a> distinguishes continuous flow from constant flow and describes how local conditions influence it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservation also involves the people who maintain and use the system. Changes in land ownership, water demand and the availability of skilled workers can affect its future, as discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranicaonline.org\/articles\/kariz_5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iranica\u2019s review of modern qanat challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-persian-qanat-world-heritage-property\"><\/span>The Persian Qanat World Heritage Property<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, UNESCO inscribed <strong>The Persian Qanat<\/strong>, a serial World Heritage property comprising eleven qanats. The designation recognises both their engineering and the traditions of managing shared water resources. It does not mean that every qanat in Iran is individually World Heritage listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1506\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official UNESCO listing<\/a> describes associated reservoirs, watermills and other structures. An interpretation display or cross-section can explain features that are difficult to see from ground level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask your guide which parts are accessible and whether the water is currently flowing. Follow site instructions and use designated visitor routes.
