They traveled from <a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/meymand-iranian-rocky-village\/\">Meymand<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1505\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO-listed Lut Desert<\/a>, inscribed in 2016 for its exceptional scenery and active geological processes under criteria (vii) and (viii). What could be more different from glaciers than photographing the <a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/kalout\/\">kaluts<\/a>, wind-sculpted formations of the Lut Desert? We traveled in August, when the heat made timing especially challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started in <a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/meymand-iranian-rocky-village\/\">Meymand<\/a>, where we spent a night among the village\u2019s remarkable rock-cut homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early the next morning, stocked with figs and peaches, we set out for the desert. As the heat rose, our guide stopped at an old <a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/persian-qanat\/\">qanat<\/a>, an underground water channel, where we found brief shelter from the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"photographing-the-wind-carved-kaluts\"><\/span>Photographing the wind-carved kaluts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had come for the <a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/shahdad-desert-kalouts-iran\/\">kaluts<\/a>. These monumental ridges, also called <strong>yardangs<\/strong>, are shaped by wind erosion. Their scale made the landscape feel otherworldly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stopped only briefly to take photographs. Our cameras displayed high-temperature warnings, and our thermometer showed 54\u00b0C. This was a <strong>traveler\u2019s observation, not a verified air-temperature record<\/strong>. Our guide limited the time outside the vehicle because of the extreme conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"land-surface-temperature-versus-air-temperature\"><\/span>Land-surface temperature versus air temperature<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Heat fact-check:<\/strong> NASA reported a <strong>70.7\u00b0C land-surface temperature in the Lut Desert in 2005<\/strong>. A satellite-measured ground-surface temperature is <strong>not the same as air temperature<\/strong>.
