Their dramatic silhouettes make this one of the country\u2019s most distinctive landscapes for desert photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known locally as <em>kaluts<\/em> and to geologists as <em>yardangs<\/em>, these landforms have been shaped by wind-driven erosion. The landscape is exceptionally arid, but describing the entire Lut Desert as lifeless is inaccurate: UNESCO documents desert-adapted plants and animals, particularly toward its margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the approaches to the desert, look for <em>nebkhas<\/em>, mounds of sand that accumulate around shrubs and other vegetation. UNESCO notes that these formations can reach 12 metres or more in the Lut region. They are different from the rocky kalut ridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scale, quiet and changing light make the kaluts especially striking at sunrise and sunset.
