They don\u2019t want to be anywhere where there\u2019s military activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/why-you-should-stay-at-a-family-homestay-during-your-trip-to-iran\/\" title=\"Why Choose a Family Homestay in Iran\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4318\">Iran tour<\/a> scheduled for September, Moore said she\u2019s uncertain whether the trip will actually go forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause the process of getting visas to Iran is so time-consuming, we\u2019ve initiated the process,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, we want to assess the situation. We\u2019re telling people to hold tight and let\u2019s see what happens over the next two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-story-of-allen-a-us-citizen-returning-to-iran-after-50-years\"><em>The story of Allen\u2014A US citizen returning to Iran after 50 years<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Journeys International, which has offered <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/iran-tours\/\" title=\"Iran tours\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Iran tours<\/a> since 2015, has seen interest fall off sharply among its clientele, which is primarily from the U.S., during the past month, said President Robin Pollak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople have really started to get skittish,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re not getting new sign-ups and most of our American travelers have pulled out and are making alternative plans. While people feel Iran is probably still safe, they also feel it\u2019s something they can do later when things calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At\u00a0G Adventures, which offers a 14-day <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/how-to-visit-iran-in-one-week\/\" title=\"One Week in Iran: A Whirlwind Tour Guide\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4319\">Iran itinerary<\/a>, bookings among American travelers has fallen by 14 percent this year, said communications director Kim McCabe. Officially, it\u2019s not. The&nbsp;U.S. State Department, which has had a travel advisory against Iran since 1979, cites \u201cthe risk of kidnapping, arrest and detention of U.S. citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour operators who spoke with Skift strongly disagree, maintaining that Iran has proven to be a safe and remarkably hospitable place for travelers, including Americans. The biggest obstacle they see is the widespread perception that the country is not safe or that visitors will be met with hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a country that is often portrayed as unwelcoming, but the reality is quite the opposite,\u201d Gray said. \u201cIranians are warm, friendly and eager to show off their country to foreigners. They understand that American visitors do not reflect the way America is portrayed to them by their government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tourism-potential\">TOURISM POTENTIAL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While Americans comprise less than 1 percent of the 6.5 million international visitors to Iran each year, according to the&nbsp;U.N. World Tourism Organization, interest had been gaining steady momentum. The number of U.S. travelers to Iran grew by 62 percent between 2014 and 2016, according to the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemand for Iran has been a real up and down situation,\u201d Moore said. \u201cFour years ago it was at a high point. Then we ran into problems in 2017 when Trump announced the travel ban on Muslims.
