The items are laid on a cloth called a <em>sofreh<\/em>, which is why you will also hear the name <em>sofreh-ye haft-sin<\/em>; today many families use a table. The display is set up before the turn of the year, in the room where guests are received, and stays in place through the first days of Nowruz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-seven-items-of-haft-sin\"><\/span>The seven items of Haft-sin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families choose their own seven from a larger set of &#8220;s&#8221; words, so no two tables are quite alike. The Encyclopaedia Iranica notes only a doubtful reference in a manuscript attributed to the Safavid era, few mentions in the accounts of 19th-century travellers who described Nowruz in detail, and concludes that the Haft-sin as we know it seems to have become widespread only in the last century, helped by newspapers, radio and television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may also read that the table was once a &#8220;haft-shin&#8221; of seven items beginning with <em>sh<\/em>, such as <em>sharab<\/em> (wine) and <em>shir<\/em> (milk), or that the name comes from <em>haft sini<\/em>, &#8220;seven trays&#8221;. Iranica treats these explanations as late speculation, not established history. What is certain is that the custom of a special Nowruz spread, with greenery, food and light, is much older than the name Haft-sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"when-do-you-set-and-clear-the-haft-sin\"><\/span>When do you set and clear the Haft-sin?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families set the Haft-sin in the last days before Nowruz, when the sabzeh has grown a few centimetres high. In 2027 the year turns at about 23:54 Iran time on Saturday 20 March, so families in Iran will gather around the table late that evening. At the moment of <em>tahvil-e sal<\/em>, the turn of the year, the family sits around the table; elders often hand out <em>eidi<\/em>, gifts of new banknotes, sometimes tucked between the pages of the book on the table.
