Its houses climb the hillside in compact layers, with the roof of one building often serving as a walkway or courtyard for the building above. Along with its bazaar, forested setting and mountain trails, this distinctive layout makes Masouleh one of the best-known villages in Iran.

Spring through early autumn is the easiest time to visit Masouleh, with greener scenery and generally milder conditions. Summer weekends can be busy, so a weekday visit is usually quieter if your schedule allows.

Winter can bring snow, ice and freezing temperatures. If you visit in the colder months, take warm clothing, suitable footwear and check the road and weather conditions before setting out.

Contents

Where is Masouleh?

What type of trips are suitable for Masouleh?

Climate of Masouleh

How was Masouleh formed and why is it important?

Sightseeing in Masouleh

Tourist Attractions Around Masouleh

Conclusion

Where is Masouleh?

Masouleh sits on a steep hillside in Fuman County, southwest of Rasht. Start at the lower part of the settlement and work uphill toward the bazaar. The paths change level frequently and are easier to follow if you use the bazaar as a landmark.

Masouleh – Credit: Salam-e no

From the Gilan side, approach through Fuman. The national tourism portal describes Masouleh and Rudkhan Castle as separate trips out of Fuman, so allow travel time between them.

The mountain approach from the Khalkhal side via Majalan is a separate route. Use the Fuman approach for a regular visit unless you have current local confirmation that the mountain road is passable for your vehicle.

Rain and fog can reduce visibility on the final climb. In winter, snow or ice can affect access even on the Fuman road.

One route to Masouleh from Tehran follows the Qazvin–Rasht road towards Saravan, then continues via Fuman.

What type of trips are suitable for Masouleh?

Masouleh can be visited as a day trip, but staying overnight gives you more time to explore the village after the busiest hours and to include nearby walks or mountain routes.

For a short visit, spend your time on the lanes above and below the bazaar. Thus, one can expect to find both small and large waterfalls.

Two small waterfalls near Masouleh are described below, along with their locations.

Masouleh River Waterfall

As the name suggests, this waterfall is located on the Masouleh River, which we introduced earlier. The waterfall is situated to the west of Masouleh, at the beginning of the Majelan road. If you follow the river’s course against the water’s flow, after a short walk, you’ll reach the waterfall.

If you’re traveling by private car, the waterfall is near Masouleh’s parking area.

Trishom Waterfall

Trishom waterfall is located on the same path that climbers take to ascend to Trishom peak.

To get there, before reaching Masouleh from the Fuman road, take a side road towards the waterfall. After the Ashklet junction, with about an hour and a half of walking, you’ll reach the waterfall. Since the waterfall isn’t marked on maps like Google Maps, it’s advisable to seek assistance from local guides.

Shah Moalem Peak or Masouleh Mountain

Shah Moalem rises to about 3,050 meters according to Visit Iran. It does not have a motorable road, and there’s only one footpath through the forest, which due to frequent use has lost its vegetation cover.

With the help of local guides and a roughly 2-hour hike, you can reach this mountainous area. Please note that there are no amenities or accommodations available, only a spring in Lalandis.

Shepherds bring their flocks of sheep from the surrounding villages to Lalandis. The picturesque scenery, accompanied by the sound of the sheep’s bells, creates a uniquely serene atmosphere.

Conclusion

Masouleh is worth more than a quick photo stop. Its terraced streets, bazaar, mountain setting and access to nearby hiking routes make it a practical base for exploring this part of Gilan. Staying beyond the busiest daytime hours also gives you a quieter look at daily life in the village.

Visit Masouleh to experience life in mountain-side homes, walk through misty landscapes, and discover rich Persian traditions and handcrafts.

[15802,308
15803,15804
post-4588","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gilan","category-destinations","tag-gilan","tag-masouleh
["GET
