The cooler choices are the Caspian provinces, Kurdistan and the mountains. Winter, from December to February, is cold in the northwest and northeast, but it is the season for skiing near Tehran and the best time for the Persian Gulf islands. In 2027 Ramadan runs through most of February and ends with Eid al-Fitr around 10 March, just before Nowruz. During Ramadan many restaurants close in daylight, though hotels serve guests. The mourning months of Muharram and Safar, with Ashura, bring processions and closures. Check the Iran public holidays calendar before fixing dates.

Iran visa and entry

Who needs a visa

Most nationalities need a visa. Rules differ by passport and change often, so read our Iran visa guide and your country page from the list above. In short:

Most travellers apply online for an authorisation code, then collect the visa at an Iranian embassy or, where allowed, on arrival at the airport.

Visa on arrival is not something to rely on in 2026. Airlines may refuse boarding without a pre-approved visa, and land borders are less predictable. Get your visa before you travel.

British, Canadian and US citizens cannot travel independently. They must be accompanied by a licensed guide or tour for the whole trip, and their visa codes take longer.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months after you arrive.

If you need more time, a tourist visa can usually be extended in Iran.

SURFIRAN’s tourist visa service handles the authorisation code. Travel services such as visas, hotels and transport tickets are also sold by our sister company OrientTrips.

Visa-free entry

Since 2024 Iran has let holders of ordinary passports from a list of countries visit for up to 15 days without a visa. The list has changed since then: Indian citizens, for example, have needed a visa again since November 2025. If your country is on the list, check it again shortly before you fly.

Travel insurance

Since May 2024 visa applicants must have Iranian travel insurance, issued by Iran Insurance Company and emailed after the visa is approved. It covers medical treatment in Iran. Many foreign insurers exclude Iran, so if you want cover for cancellation, lost luggage or evacuation, read your policy’s country list closely. OrientTrips sells travel insurance for Iran.

Paperwork to copy

Keep printed and digital copies of these, and leave a set with someone at home:

passport photo page and visa or visa grant notice

flight and hotel bookings

insurance certificate and emergency contact numbers

contact details for your bank, to stop cards if needed

a few spare passport photos

Money, cards and costs

Rials and tomans

Iran’s currency is the rial, but almost every price you hear is in tomans. One toman is ten rials, so 100,000 rials is 10,000 tomans. Price tags, menus and taxi drivers rarely say which unit they mean. Ask, and repeat the total back before you hand over cash.

A 2025 law will remove four zeros from the rial: 10,000 of today’s rials become one new rial. The change is being phased in over several years, so during your trip you may see prices in old rials, new rials and tomans side by side.

Foreign cards do not work

International Visa and Mastercard cards do not work at Iranian ATMs or in shops, because Iran’s banking network is not connected to them. Traveller’s cheques are not accepted either. Plan to pay for most things in cash, or with a local prepaid card.

Bring euros or US dollars in clean, undamaged notes; they are the easiest to exchange. British pounds are harder. Change money at banks or licensed exchange offices, not with men on the street, and keep the receipt. In Tehran the exchange offices cluster on and around Ferdowsi Street. Our money exchange guide has the details, including where to change money in other cities.

Exchange offices on Ferdowsi Street in Tehran.

Tourist cards

A prepaid tourist card means you can carry less cash: you load it with money and pay at card machines as Iranians do. The OrientTrips Iran Tourist Card is one option. Confirm how to load it, the fees and where it is accepted before you rely on it.

A prepaid tourist card can be used on Iran’s domestic card network.

Daily costs

Prices move quickly with the exchange rate, so any figure we print would date within weeks. As a guide, simple meals in local restaurants and bakeries are cheap by European standards, as are intercity buses and taxis. Entrance fees for foreigners at major sites are higher than for Iranians but still modest. The big costs are hotels, guides, private drivers and domestic flights. For a realistic budget see how much a tour to Iran costs.

Tipping

Tipping (anaam) is common but not required. Round up a taxi fare, leave a little extra in a sit-down restaurant if service is not already added, and tip guides and drivers at the end of a tour if you were happy. Expect taarof: a driver may say “it’s nothing, be my guest”. Offer again; they don’t mean it. In 2026 Iran shut off international internet access twice: for about three weeks during the January protests and for 88 days from the start of the war in late February. Access returned at the end of May, but most global platforms remain blocked, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube and Facebook, and some Google services work only partly. Connections can be slowed or cut again at short notice.

In practice: download offline maps, translation packs and your bookings before you land. Give your family your hotel’s phone number. Do not count on video calls.

Buying a SIM card

Tourist SIM cards can be ordered before arrival.

A local prepaid SIM is cheaper and more useful than roaming. The main operators are Irancell, Hamrah-e Aval (MCI) and Rightel, and Irancell is the usual choice for visitors. You need your passport to register it, and you can buy one at Imam Khomeini Airport or from authorised shops in the cities. An unregistered foreign phone works with a local SIM for a limited period; for long stays, read about phone registration in our internet and apps guide. You can also order an Iran tourist SIM card from OrientTrips to pick up on arrival.

Useful apps

Snapp and Tap30: Iranian ride-hailing apps with fixed prices shown in advance. Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport handles mainly domestic flights. Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad and Tabriz also have international airports. Routes and airlines have changed many times in 2026, so check what is actually flying before you plan around a connection. OrientTrips sells domestic and international flights.

Trains

Iran’s railways link Tehran with Mashhad, Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, Kerman, Shiraz, Tabriz and Bandar Abbas. Overnight sleeper trains on the long routes save a hotel night. Book early around Nowruz and holidays. The line through the Alborz to the Caspian is part of the UNESCO-listed Trans-Iranian Railway and is worth the ride for the views alone. VIP buses, with three wide seats across, are cheap and comfortable enough for a daytime trip. The Qajars moved the capital to Tehran; the Pahlavis ruled until the 1979 revolution created the Islamic Republic.

Our timeline of Iranian dynasties covers each era and the sites you can visit, and the Cyrus Cylinder article tells the story of its most famous inscription.

A timeline of Iranian history.

Science, poetry and faith

Iran gave the world Avicenna (Ibn Sina) in medicine and al-Khwarizmi in mathematics, and the poets Ferdowsi, Rumi, Saadi and Hafez, who are still quoted at dinner tables.
