At the Gargar mills, water passes through rock-cut tunnels and drops into a basin below the town. Downstream, tunnels channel water past the mills before it falls into the basin. UNESCO describes an irrigated landscape of about 40,000 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">River transport was another function of the network, alongside water supply, irrigation and milling. Follow the water from the river to the intake, then to the tunnels and mills. Farther downstream, the diverted water supported irrigation on the Mianab plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1315\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO assessment<\/a> distinguishes the survival of the overall network from its original working condition. Irrigation and water supply have retained more of their function than the dams. UNESCO notes Roman influence on the system\u2019s engineering. The Lashkar bridge-weir belongs to the wider network of crossings and water-control structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salasel Castle provided a point from which the waterworks could be managed. Its position helps explain why the fortified site belongs to the hydraulic ensemble alongside the weirs and canals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The octagonal Kolah Farangi tower overlooks Band-e Mizan.
