Hasan-i Sabbah made it his headquarters in 1090, and it became a centre of the Nizari Ismaili state until the Mongol conquest in 1256. Today, the ruins reward a visit for their mountain setting, surviving structures and place in medieval history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name \u201cCastle of the Assassins\u201d is familiar from books and games, but it tells only part of the story. Alamut also supported scholarship, agriculture and the life of a religious community. Moallem Kalayeh is a town in the wider district, not the village directly beneath the fortress. Its upper and lower sections and walls use the natural cliffs as part of the defences. His seizure of Alamut established a durable base for the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The familiar \u201cAssassins\u201d label comes from hostile medieval terminology and its European reception. He adopted Ismaili teachings as a young man, travelled to Egypt and returned to Iran before taking Alamut in 1090. Historian Farhad Daftary\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranicaonline.org\/articles\/hasan-sabbah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biographical account<\/a> places him within the Ismaili missionary network, rather than treating him simply as a mysterious castle lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He remained Alamut\u2019s leader until his death in 1124. His successors continued to govern from the fortress. Alamut\u2019s own surrender came after that of the imam Rukn al-Din Khurshah at Maymundez, a different fortress. The events should not be compressed into one siege.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasan took Alamut in 1090 through infiltration and the conversion of supporters within the fortress. This marked the beginning of an open revolt against Seljuq rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medieval narratives add colourful details about the takeover. The central point is the gradual building of support around and inside the stronghold, rather than a battlefield assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Fatimid succession dispute of 1094, Hasan supported Nizar\u2019s claim to the imamate. Their distinct history follows the Fatimid succession dispute of 1094. The historian Juvayni examined its collection before the destruction. His account is an important source, but he wrote from the conquerors\u2019 side.
