Rather than a single road, this was a changing network of overland corridors linking cities, markets and caravan stops across many regions.

Camel travel recalls the caravan journeys once associated with Iran’s historic trade routes.

Contents

The Silk Roads Were a Network, Not One Road

Iran and the Silk Roads

Caravanserais and the Culture of the Road

Exploring Iran’s Silk Road Heritage Today

The Silk Roads Were a Network, Not One Road

The Silk Roads connected communities across East, Central and Western Asia for centuries. Silk was among the high-value goods carried westward, but the routes also moved textiles, metals, ceramics, spices and other commodities. Their importance went beyond commerce: travellers and merchants helped circulate religions, artistic traditions, scientific knowledge and technologies.

UNESCO describes the Silk Roads as an interconnected web of routes rather than a single fixed itinerary. Different branches rose or declined according to political power, security, geography and changing patterns of trade.

Iran and the Silk Roads

Iran’s position between Central Asia, the Iranian Plateau, Mesopotamia and Anatolia made it an important part of long-distance exchange. Historical corridors crossed areas around Khorasan and continued west through cities and regions such as Nishapur, Damghan, Semnan, Ray, Qazvin and Tabriz. Other branches connected with Hamadan and routes toward Mesopotamia.

Iran occupied a strategic position within the wider network of Silk Roads.

Caravanserais and the Culture of the Road

Caravanserais were essential infrastructure on Iran’s historical roads. These roadside inns offered travellers and caravans shelter, food and water. They also became meeting points where people from different languages, cultures and religions exchanged goods and ideas.

In 2023, UNESCO inscribed The Persian Caravanserai, a serial World Heritage property comprising 54 caravanserais across Iran. One component is Robat-e Sharaf in Khorasan, a major surviving caravanserai associated with the historic road network.

Exploring Iran’s Silk Road Heritage Today

Travellers can still encounter Silk Road heritage through caravanserais, bazaars, historic cities and archaeological landscapes across Iran.
