rel="noopener">54-component geographical register. Coordinates identify the listed sites, not necessarily a vehicle entrance. The final column gives the official component reference so similarly named caravanserais can be distinguished.

The Achaemenid Royal Road linked Sardis and Susa over roughly 2,500 kilometres. ICOMOS describes its road stations, where messengers and travellers could rest and obtain fresh mounts, as precursors of later caravanserais. This is a history of changing travel infrastructure, rather than proof that every surviving inn began in the Achaemenid period.

Caravanserais gave merchants and pilgrims a place to rest and unload their animals. Access to water helped determine where inns were built. Look for related structures such as cisterns, which can stand apart from the main building.

People travelling for trade and pilgrimage often shared the same routes. The inns along the Silk Roads in Iran make that overlap visible through spaces for lodging, storing goods and sheltering animals.

A courtyard surrounded by rooms is a common plan, but it is not universal. Kiani and Kleiss describe rectangular, circular and octagonal caravanserais, as well as roofed mountain buildings without an internal courtyard. An iwan is a vaulted hall open on one side.

Caravanserais had different sponsors, including rulers, merchants and religious foundations. Their functions overlapped with trade and pilgrimage. The term “Shah Abbasi” was also applied broadly to buildings of several periods, so the name alone does not prove construction under Shah Abbas I.

Surviving inns let you compare how builders solved the same practical problems in different settings, from exposed desert routes to city bazaars.

Architectural Design and Features

Persian Caravanserai

Water supplies and terrain influenced where caravanserais were built. There was no universal rule placing every pair within 40 kilometres. For a modern visit, use each site’s actual location rather than treating the historical network as a sequence of equally spaced stops.

Unique Architectural Elements

In a common courtyard plan, guest rooms face inward while passages and stables occupy the space behind them. The arrangement separates accommodation from areas used by pack animals. It is one important caravanserai type, alongside the roofed and polygonal forms described above.

The entrance to a caravanserai was typically emphasized by a projecting block, giving it a distinct architectural presence. Once inside, the courtyard was often surrounded by chambers intended for rest. Behind these chambers were additional halls for storing pack animals and goods. It was built under Naser al-Din Shah, on the initiative of the governor Saad al-Saltaneh. Its position within the trading quarter helps explain the close connection between covered commercial passages, courtyards and accommodation for merchants.

The complex brought together shops, a bathhouse, a mosque, a timcheh, or covered trading space, and a shotor-khan, or camel stable. Archaeologist Heinz Luschey dates the new caravanserai to 1681–1685 and identifies its builder as Shaikh Ali Khan Zangana in his study of Bisotun. The familiar Shah Abbasi name should not be treated as proof that Shah Abbas I commissioned this building.

Luschey describes brick walls on dressed-stone bases, a four-iwan courtyard, vaulted sleeping rooms and stabling behind them. This is the new caravanserai, distinct from the older ruined structure recorded by earlier travellers at Bisotun. A restored guest room and an excavated ruin offer different encounters with the same travel tradition.

Conservation Efforts

UNESCO’s conservation assessment calls for regular maintenance, especially at unused sites exposed to severe weather. It also highlights associated cisterns, tombs and kilns. These surrounding structures help explain how an inn functioned and require protection alongside its main walls.

Restoration does not mean that every visible surface is original. UNESCO notes that some earlier interventions lacked detailed documentation, making old and new work difficult to distinguish. More recent conservation seeks to make replacement materials identifiable while following traditional building methods.

Modern Usage and Tourism

In Isfahan, Archnet identifies the Abbasi Hotel as a converted and expanded Safavid caravanserai. Compare the historic courtyard with the modern accommodation added around it. The conversion is an example of how an inn can retain part of its plan while taking on a different use.

Zein-o-din near Yazd illustrates a different caravanserai plan.
