It\u2019s a perfect example of great <strong>Persian architecture<\/strong> and a showcase for all of Iran\u2019s delicate handicrafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century, the bazaar expanded during the reign of the <strong>Safavid<\/strong> king Shah Abbas and connects <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/celebration-color-naqsh-e-jahan-isfahan\/\">Naqshe Jahan Square<\/a><\/strong> to the <strong>Friday Mosque<\/strong>, two <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/iran-world-heritage-sites\/\">UNESCO<\/a><\/strong> world heritage sites and the most famous highlights of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/isfahan-travel-guide\/\">Isfahan<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to imagine visiting the city without wandering in the bazaar\u2019s alleys, losing track of time and space under the high ceilings, considered the world\u2019s longest roofed market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-brief-history-of-isfahan-grand-bazaar\">A Brief History of Isfahan Grand Bazaar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"789\" title=\"Isfahan\" src=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/isfahan011-1024x789.jpg\" alt=\"Isfahan\" class=\"wp-image-66139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/isfahan011-1024x789.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/isfahan011-780x601.jpg 780w, https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/isfahan011-768x592.jpg 768w, https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/isfahan011-610x470.jpg 610w, https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/isfahan011.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/khordad-national-uprising\/\" title=\"Khordad National Uprising\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3133\">Isfahan Grand Bazaar<\/a> is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the <strong>Middle East<\/strong>. The bazaar of Isfahan originally built during the <strong>Seljuk Era<\/strong>, in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century, located south of the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/jameh-mosque-of-yazd\/\" title=\"Jameh Mosque of Yazd: A Visitor&#8217;s Guide\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"81861\">Jameh Mosque<\/a>, one of Iran\u2019s oldest mosques. Indeed, bazaars usually placed close to the mosque as both occupied a central role in people\u2019s daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gradually, various sections added to the bazaar until the reign of the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/safavid-dynasty\/\" title=\"The Safavid Dynasty: The Birth of Modern Iran\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"83137\">Safavid Dynasty<\/a>. While <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/naqsh-ejahan-square\/\" title=\"Naqsh-e Jahan Square: Esfahan&#8217;s Timeless Glory\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"83138\">Naqshe Jahan<\/a> would gather places holding political power, the bazaar played an important role as well as it contained the economic power. Yet, it distinguishes itself by being the longest roofed market in the world (not to be mistaken with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/tabriz-travel-guide\/\">Tabriz<\/a><\/strong> Grand Bazaar, which is the world\u2019s <em>largest<\/em> roofed market). It\u2019s indeed a vaulted two-kilometers street, with high ceilings and corridors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each section of the bazaar is divided into smaller ones, where shops are organized based on what they sell (carpets, spices, metalwork, etc). The intersections of these alleys are called \u201cChahar-su\u201d (literally \u201cfour directions\u201d) and have high ceilings with well-decorated brick domes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-visits-and-shopping-in-isfahan-grand-bazaar\">Visits and Shopping in Isfahan Grand Bazaar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If shops are the main activities in the bazaar, it also contains schools, mosques, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/iranian-caravanserais-unesco\/\">caravanserais<\/a><\/strong>, which are now historical buildings. These places are arcaded courtyards, smaller than caravanserais, that were used as marketplaces for merchants of one specific type of goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timcheh of Isfahan Bazaar built during the Qajar Era and is a beautiful two-story building organized around a courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another singular location within Isfahan Grand Bazaar is <strong>Assar Khaneh Shahi<\/strong>. Built 400 years ago, this place was traditionally used to extract oil from seeds (usually from sesame and cottonseed). Isfahan Grand Bazaar is first famous for <strong>carpets <\/strong>and <strong>kilims <\/strong>(flat tapestry-woven carpets). However, you can find all types of Iranian souvenirs there, such as: Khatam Kari (inlay work), <strong>Ghalam Zani<\/strong> (metal engraving), <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/iranian-minakari-art-heaven\/\" title=\"Iranian Minakari &#8211; The Art of Heaven\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3130\">Mina Kari<\/a> (enamel metal painting), ceramics and pottery, miniatures, fabrics (termeh and ghalamkar), mosaics, and so on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-access-to-isfahan-grand-bazaar\">Access to Isfahan Grand Bazaar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Isfahan Grand Bazaar is located in Isfahan city center. It spreads from the north of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/celebration-color-naqsh-e-jahan-isfahan\/\">Naqshe Jahan Square<\/a><\/strong> (Qeysarieh Gate) to the old square near the Friday Mosque. It\u2019s thus pretty easy to access the bazaar whether you\u2019re on foot, metro, bus or taxi. The busiest time is during the morning and at midday, when most shops are open and customers go from one to the other. The closer we get to sunset, the more shops close their doors. Pay attention to Fridays and National Holidays, during which the bazaar is closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nearby-attractions-to-isfahan-grand-bazaar\">Nearby Attractions to Isfahan Grand Bazaar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With Qeysarieh Gate located on Naqshe Jahan Square, the visit of Isfahan Grand Bazaar can perfectly be combined with other important sights such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/shah-mosque-isfahan\/\">Shah Mosque<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/sheikh-lotfollah-mosque-isfahan\/\">Lotfollah Mosque<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/aali-qapu-palace\/\">Ali Qapu Palace<\/a><\/strong>.
