The mosque preserves major Seljuk additions, while much of the covered market visible today developed later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah Abbas I created a new commercial and ceremonial center around Naqsh-e Jahan. At intervals, side lanes open onto smaller shops, covered trading halls and courtyard complexes. The changes in ceiling height and light make these junctions easy to spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <em>chahar-su<\/em> is a junction where market passages cross. Look up at the dome before choosing a side lane. A <em>timcheh<\/em> is typically a smaller covered trading space. Look beyond the shopfronts to see how these spaces connect to the main passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assar Khaneh Shahi is a former oil press near the square end of the market.
