These sites reflect different histories and ways of worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelver Shia Islam has official status in Iran. Sunni Muslims, Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Mandaeans and Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds are also part of the country\u2019s religious history. Islam spread after the Arab conquest in the seventh century, and conversion took place over a much longer period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1501, Shah Ismail I founded the Safavid state and declared Twelver Shiism its official religion. The Armenian monasteries of St Thaddeus and St Stepanos and the Chapel of Dzordzor form a UNESCO World Heritage property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Isfahan\u2019s New Julfa quarter, Armenian churches reflect the community established there under Shah Abbas I. Vank Cathedral is a place to see Armenian Christian art within a building shaped by its Safavid setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communities associated with the Church of the East have long used Syriac in worship.
