His exact birth year is uncertain: the revised Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry cautions against treating the familiar date of 980 as firmly established. His reputation rests on philosophy as well as medicine.

Contributions Across Disciplines

The Canon of Medicine and The Book of Healing are different kinds of work. The Canon is medical; the Healing is an extensive philosophical and scientific synthesis, including metaphysics. Its title should not lead a visitor to mistake it for a second medical handbook.

Latin translations helped carry Avicenna’s work into European scholarly life. His Canon remained important in medical teaching into the seventeenth century, while his philosophy had a separate and lasting influence. The memorial therefore represents more than the career of a physician.

Early Life and Education

Avicenna grew up and studied in Bukhara under the Samanids. His autobiography describes intensive study and access to the ruler’s library. Read these accounts as the record of a particular intellectual life, rather than as evidence that he mastered every subject independently of teachers or historical circumstances.

The Tomb and Its Collections

The complex contains a southern museum hall and a northern library. It also commemorates people other than Avicenna: Ali Mousavi’s account in Encyclopaedia Iranica identifies the tomb of his host, Abu Saeed Dokhduh, and that of the much later poet Aref Qazvini. Aref was not Avicenna’s contemporary or close associate.

Tiled ceiling of the Hafez memorial pavilion in Shiraz.

A Brief History of the Mausoleum

The present building replaced an older tomb that the Qajar princess Negar Khanom had repaired in 1877, according to Ali Mousavi. Iran’s heritage dossier records the handover of Seyhoun’s new building to the Society for the National Heritage of Iran in 1951. Visit Iran dates its inauguration to 1954.

Design and Features

Mausoleum of Avicenna in Hamedan, Iran

Seyhoun’s design draws on the form of Gonbad-e Qabus, reinterpreted as an open tower rather than a copy of the medieval brick monument. Visit Iran also identifies Alvand granite on the façade and garden and pool forms drawn from Iranian architectural traditions. The twelve supports are commonly explained as a reference to Avicenna’s breadth of learning.

At the east entrance, ten granite columns mark the portico. Visit Iran associates them with the millennium commemorated by the memorial. Look above the platform for the twelve open supports of the tower, traditionally associated with Avicenna’s range of learning. Iran’s heritage dossier records the tower as about 21 metres high above its platform.

The Various Sections of the Abū ‘Ali Sina Mausoleum

A useful visit moves between the exterior tower, the tomb area and the collections.
