Located in the southeastern part of the Kurdkuy district<\/strong> in Golestan Province<\/a><\/strong>, the Jahan Nama Protected Area<\/strong> spans approximately 38,000 hectares, making it the second-largest protected area in the province after Golestan National Park<\/a><\/strong>. Since 1973, it has been under the supervision of the Environmental Protection Organization of Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geographic and Natural Splendor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Situated at elevations ranging from 600 to 3,086 meters above sea level, Jahan Nama is located 18 kilometers south of Gorgan<\/a><\/strong> (near Ziarat village) and 17 kilometers south of the city of Kurdkuy. The protected area encompasses terrains from the Rabad-e Sefid village in the east to Darazno and Radkan in the west, presenting a diverse landscape rich in flora and fauna.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jahan Nama boasts the healthiest and most untouched mid-mountain (foothill) forests in northern Iran. Following the extinction of the Mazandaran<\/a><\/strong> tiger in the 1940s, extensive research has been conducted to explore the possibility of this magnificent creature’s presence, underscoring Jahan Nama’s potential as a viable habitat for tigers. The area is home to Hyrcanian forests<\/a><\/strong>, some of the oldest forests in the world, with 607 identified plant species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area derives its name from the Jahan Nama summer village located on its fringes. Featuring ancient summer villages, historical and archaeological sites, diverse geography, and climate, along with mountains, rivers, springs, rare wildlife, and unique vegetation, Jahan Nama offers numerous attractions for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 35-meter tall Radkan tower, known as “Mil-e Radkan<\/strong>,” located on the edge of the protected area, is believed to be the tomb of one of the Bavand dynasty’s commanders in Tabaristan, Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Vandarin Bavandi. Additionally, the Ziarat Waterfall<\/strong> is a natural attraction situated approximately 5 kilometers from Ziarat village in the northeast of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jahan Nama’s forests are inhabited by trees such as beech, Persian ironwood, yew, alder, oak, and elm, alongside bushes and flowers including borage, Artemisia, primrose, and wild geranium. Predatory birds such as hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, and vultures find refuge here, contributing to the area’s rich biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ground fowl like partridges, pheasants, and quails, alongside mammals such as leopards, brown bears, wolves, red deer, roe deer, wild goats, lynxes, wild boars, porcupines, hares, jackals, squirrels, and badgers, call this sanctuary home. The higher altitudes serve as excellent habitats for large birds of prey and the famous large pheasants known as “Caspian Snowcock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
