Despite being a modern architectural achievement, the Tomb of Nader Shah-e Afshar<\/strong> stands as one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Mashhad<\/a><\/strong>. This mausoleum serves as a memorial to Nader Shah Afshar<\/strong> and offers visitors a glimpse into a tumultuous period of Iranian history. Located within the Naderi Garden Museum<\/strong>, it attracts a considerable number of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brief History of Nader Shah Afshar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before delving into the mausoleum’s history and various events during its construction, a brief introduction to Nader Shah Afshar is warranted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originating from the Afshar tribe<\/strong>, Nader Shah was instrumental in driving out Russian and Ottoman forces from Iranian soil. Ascending to power as the army commander of Shah Tahmasp II<\/strong> of the Safavid<\/strong> dynasty, he successfully defeated the Afghans, quelling their rebellions across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from his military conquests, Nader Shah is renowned for his invasion of India and acquisition of the Koh-i-Noor diamond<\/strong>. Unfortunately, his later years were marked by paranoia, leading to his assassination in Quchan by his own officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mashhad<\/strong> has always been one of Iran’s most significant cities, and it was here that Nader Shah rose in rebellion, making the city the capital of Iran<\/a> during his reign. He built several tombs for himself, the first of which was created in 1734.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following his conquests, he ordered the construction of another tomb using black marble stones, adding grandeur to the monument. The family tomb at Khorshid Palace<\/strong> is another notable burial site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After his murder, his body was temporarily interred in one of these tombs by soldiers who had attacked him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing Nader Shah’s achievements and popularity among many kings, the Qajar<\/strong> dynasty moved his body to a more magnificent tomb befitting his stature. Initially transferred to Tehran<\/a><\/strong>, a splendid tomb was eventually constructed for him. To commemorate Nader Shah, the National Heritage Association of Iran commissioned a new tomb, designed by the renowned Iranian architect Hooshang Seyhoun<\/strong>, completed in 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new mausoleum of Nader Shah<\/strong>, situated in the northwest corner of Shohada Square, is one of Mashhad’s most significant historical tourist attractions after the Imam Reza shrine<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mausoleum, set within a 14,400 square meter garden, features a tomb with a tent-like covering, a twelve-step platform, statues including Nader Shah on horseback, an elevated platform near the grave, museum halls, and a bookshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed and executed by engineer Seyhoun, with sculptures by the famous artist Abolhassan Sadighi, the construction prominently uses hard granite materials. The tent-like covering symbolizes the tribal tent where Nader Shah was born and died, and the use of maroon marble stones inside the mausoleum represents his tragic end. The complex, inaugurated in 1963, offers a blend of grandeur and historical narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Open every day except public holidays, from 9 AM to 5 PM, the mausoleum welcomes visitors. There is an admission fee, with higher rates for non-Iranian nationals. The best time to visit, for an enjoyable experience amidst lush surroundings and mild weather, is during spring, especially May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easily accessible, the mausoleum is near the Imam Reza shrine. Visitors can use public transport such as buses, the metro, or taxis, or drive there. If using the metro, alight at Shohada Station and walk for about 5 minutes to reach the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
