Previously, the <strong><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/saint-mary-church-a-must-visit-historic-site-in-tehran\/\" title=\"Saint Mary Church\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"470\">Saint Mary Church<\/a><\/strong> served as the Armenian Diocese\u2019s headquarters, but its location and size became inadequate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the support of a benefactor, <strong>Markar Sarkissian<\/strong>, the diocese acquired land at Karim Khan Zand and Nejatollahi streets. <strong>Architect Eugene Aftandilian<\/strong> designed the cathedral, and construction began on April 3, 1964, led by <strong>Bishop Ardak Manoukian<\/strong>.
