These stories were not just made for entertainment, but they carried lessons about values, struggles, and victories. They helped Iranians to feel proud of their history and connected to their culture. Zoroastrianism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of Zoroaster as prophet. The term Zoroastrianism is, in general usage, essentially synonymous with Mazdaism (the worship of Ahura Mazda, exalted by Zoroaster as the supreme divine authority). In Zoroastrianism, the Creator Ahura Mazda is all good, and no evil originates from Him.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The myths emphasize moral responsibility, where people have to choose between the path of good over evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoroastrian deities like <strong><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/mithraism\/\" title=\"Mithraism: Ancient Wisdom Illuminating Persian History\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"69174\">Mithra<\/a><\/strong>, the god of sun and justice, and <strong>Anahita<\/strong>, the goddess of water and fertility, also played important roles, symbolizing the harmonious forces of nature and their influence on human life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-shahnameh-the-soul-of-persian-myths\">The Shahnameh: The Soul of Persian Myths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These stories were transmitted orally from generation to generation until <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/ferdowsi\/\">Ferdowsi<\/a><\/strong> wrote the <strong>Shahnameh<\/strong> in the <strong>10th century<\/strong>. His epic poem is one of the most important works of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/the-must-read-of-persian-literature\/\">Persian literature<\/a><\/strong> and is still celebrated today. It truly is the heart of <strong>Persian mythology<\/strong> and has saved many myths from being forgotten. The Shahnameh, that contains over <strong>50.000 rhyming couplets<\/strong>, tells the story of Persia from its creation to the Islamic conquest. Later kings, like <strong>Jamshid<\/strong>, introduce new technologies like farming and metalwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But their stories also talked about values and topics such as arrogance. Rostam has a son, <strong>Sohrab<\/strong>, but none of them knows they are related. Later on, they meet on the battlefield as enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rostam kills Sohrab in a fight and only learns afterward that he has killed his own son. This emotional story shows the pain caused by fate and how war can destroy families. It is one of the most loved and remembered stories in Persian culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-seven-labors-of-rostam\">The Seven Labors of Rostam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another famous tale about Rostam is the <strong>Haft Khan<\/strong> (Seven Labors). In this story, Rostam faces seven dangerous challenges to save <strong>King Kaykavus<\/strong>. He fights monsters, sorcerers, and even faces deadly deserts. Each labor represents a virtue like bravery, patience, or wisdom. During times of foreign rule or cultural change, these myths reminded Iranians of their roots and gave them pride in their history. <strong>Ferdowsi\u2019s Shahnameh<\/strong> is a perfect example. When Ferdowsi wrote his epic poem, Arabic was the dominant <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/the-persian-language-and-its-dialects\/\" title=\"The Persian Language and Its Dialects: Exploring Linguistic Diversity Within Iran\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1177\">language in Iran<\/a>. By writing it in <strong>Persian<\/strong>, Ferdowsi preserved the language and the culture of Persia. His work became a symbol of Persian pride and independence. Even today, Iranians celebrate the Shahnameh as a national treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-influence-of-persian-myths\">The Influence of Persian Myths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The themes of <strong>Persian Myths<\/strong>, like <strong>love<\/strong>, <strong>sacrifice<\/strong>, and the <strong>fight between good and evil<\/strong>, are timeless, and thus, relatable, which explains why <strong>Persian mythology<\/strong> is still alive in modern Iranian culture. Indeed, stories like <strong>Rostam<\/strong> and <strong>Sohrab<\/strong> are often retold in books, plays, and movies. In cinema, the influence of Persian mythology can be seen in films like &#8220;<strong>The Last Fiction<\/strong>&#8221; (2018), an animated movie by <strong>Ashkan Rahgozar<\/strong> that reinterprets the <strong>Shahnameh<\/strong>, particularly the story of <strong>Zahhak<\/strong>, the tyrannical king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Persian myths have also influenced the world. Many of their themes and stories are universal, making it appealing to people from different cultures and backgrounds.
