It honors Mehregan&#8217;s enduring legacy and showcases the shared cultural values and historical bonds across the Persian-speaking world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the registration of <strong>the &#8220;Skill of Making and Playing the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/the-art-of-crafting-and-playing-rubab-a-unesco-heritage-achievement\/\" title=\"The Art of Crafting and Playing Rubab Recognized as UNESCO Heritage\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1162\">Rabab<\/a>,&#8221;<\/strong> the festival was officially recognized during UNESCO\u2019s 19th session in Paraguay, underscoring Mehregan&#8217;s cultural and historical significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-celebration-steeped-in-ancient-traditions\">A Celebration Steeped in Ancient Traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mehregan, also known as Jashn-e Mehr, has its roots in Zoroastrianism\u2014one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world. Grand ceremonies marked the occasion, with community gatherings, offerings, and the spirit of gratitude taking center stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The historical importance of these rituals is still reflected in the way Zoroastrian communities celebrate today, maintaining the connection between ancient customs and modern practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Today, Zoroastrian communities in Iran, particularly in cities like <strong>Yazd<\/strong> and <strong><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/the-historical-malek-mosque-in-kerman\/\" title=\"The Historical Malek Mosque in Kerman\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"73042\">Kerman<\/a><\/strong>, continue to uphold its <strong>rituals<\/strong>, preserving a cultural bridge to a past spanning <strong>millennia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rediscovering-a-forgotten-ritual\">Rediscovering a Forgotten Ritual<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the centuries, Mehregan lost some of its grandeur, especially following the Mongol invasion of Iran, which led to a gradual decline in its observance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it has endured, especially among <strong>Zoroastrians<\/strong>, rural communities, and the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/khordad-national-uprising\/\" title=\"Khordad National Uprising\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"70521\">Iranian diaspora<\/a>. Initially proposed in 2020, the Mehregan nomination faced scrutiny over its continuity in contemporary Iran. Concerns were raised about its waning public observance compared to neighboring Tajikistan, where the tradition has remained vibrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee noted that Mehregan, also referred to as Ceremony of Mehrgan (no. 01570), marks the autumn equinox and celebrates gratitude for an abundant harvest.
