From ancient times to modern Iran, women have influenced the country\u2019s culture, politics, and society in many ways. They have been <strong>leaders<\/strong>, <strong>warriors<\/strong>, <strong>poets<\/strong>, and <strong>reformers<\/strong>, showing their strength and determination throughout centuries. Compared to other ancient cultures of the time, <strong><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/pasargadae\/\" title=\"Pasargadae Travel Guide\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1142\">Persian women<\/a><\/strong> had more rights and freedoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pantea Arteshbod<\/strong> is one of this extraordinary women. She was a commander in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/cyrus-the-great\/\">Cyrus the Great<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s army. She fought alongside her husband and helped Cyrus establish the <strong>Achaemenid Empire<\/strong>. Her courage and leadership made her a legendary figure in Persian history. Another famous woman warrior was <strong>Artemisia I<\/strong>, a naval commander who fought for <strong>King Xerxes<\/strong> during the <strong>Battle of Salamis<\/strong>. Guide for US Citizens\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"73040\">Cyrus the Great<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>wife of Darius I<\/strong>, was a key figure in shaping the empire\u2019s policies. Her and other royal women had property of their own, could traveled away from the royal court, and commanded the resources of the <strong>Persian Empire<\/strong> in their own names. Queen Atossa I is also known for supporting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/zoroastrianism-mazdayasna-in-iran\/\">Zoroastrianism<\/a><\/strong> and spreading its teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-queens-of-the-sassanid-empire\">Queens of the Sassanid Empire<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Borandukht-1.jpg\" alt=\"Borandukht ()\" class=\"wp-image-87416\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Boran\/Pourandokht, Queen of the Sassanid Persia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>During the <strong><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/sasanian-empire\/\" title=\"The Sasanian Empire: Persia\u2019s Last Ancient Dynasty\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"73039\">Sassanid Empire<\/a> (224-651 CE)<\/strong>, Persia also had notable women. One of the most famous is <strong>Queen Shirin<\/strong>, the <strong>wife of King Khosrow II<\/strong>. Shirin is known as a <strong>symbol of love<\/strong> and devotion because of the famous story of her romance with Khosrow. This story inspired many poets, especially <strong>Nezami Ganjavi<\/strong>, who wrote <strong>Khosrow and Shirin<\/strong>. But Shirin was more than that: She helped people with charitable projects and promoted art and culture during her time as queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting fact under the Sassanid Empire is that two queens ruled the empire during a period of political instability. They were two sisters: <strong>Borandukht<\/strong> and <strong>Azarmidokht<\/strong>, both the <strong>daughters of Khosrow II<\/strong>. (1089-1159)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When <strong>Islam<\/strong> came to <strong>Persia<\/strong> in the <strong>7<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/strong>, women continued to contribute to the country\u2019s culture, especially in poetry. <strong>Rabia Balkhi<\/strong> is considered one of the first known <strong>Persian women poets<\/strong>. She lived in the <strong>10<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/strong> and wrote poems about love and emotions, which were unusual for women at that time. Her courage to express herself through poetry made her a pioneer, even though her life ended tragically due to the strict social rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important poetess of the time was <strong>Mahsati Ganjavi<\/strong> (12<sup>th<\/sup> century). She was known for her quatrains which often talked about love, human desire, and the complexities of life. Her work challenged the social <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/khordad-national-uprising\/\" title=\"Khordad National Uprising\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"75968\">norms<\/a> and celebrated the freedom of thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-women-under-the-qajar-and-pahlavi\">Women under the Qajar and Pahlavi<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Parvin-Etesami-1.jpg\" alt=\"Parvin E\u2019tesami\" class=\"wp-image-87407\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Parvin-Etesami-1.jpg 780w, https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Parvin-Etesami-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Parvin-Etesami-1-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rakhshandeh E&#8217;tesami, better known as Parvin E&#8217;tesami, an Iranian 20th-century Persian poet (1907-1941)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/qajar-dynasty\/\">Qajar<\/a> (1789-1925)<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/pahlavi-dynasty\/\">Pahlavi<\/a> (1925-1979)<\/strong> eras were times of reform and modernization, where women played important roles. <strong>Taj al-Saltaneh<\/strong>, a <strong>daughter of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar<\/strong>, was one of the first women in Iran to speak out for gender equality. She wrote memoirs criticizing the lack of rights for women and called for more education and freedom. Her writings give us a rare glimpse into the life of women in her time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained Writers like <strong>Parvin E\u2019tesami<\/strong> used poetry to speak about social issues and women\u2019s rights. In 2003, ebadi was awarded the nobel peace prize for her pioneering efforts for democracy and women&#8217;s, children&#8217;s, and refugee rights.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In <strong>modern Iran<\/strong>, women continue to make important contributions despite the challenges. <strong>Shirin Ebadi<\/strong>, for example, became the first Iranian woman to win the <strong>Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong> in 2003. As a lawyer and human rights activist, she has worked to defend the rights of women and children in Iran. <strong>Marjane Satrapi<\/strong>, the author and filmmaker of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/surfiran.com\/mag\/persepolis\/\">Persepolis<\/a><\/strong>, has share with the world the experiences of Iranian women.
