Photography in Iran: Rules, Etiquette and Practical Tips

Photography is possible at many places in Iran, but rules vary by site and can change without notice. The safest approach is simple: follow signs and staff instructions, ask before photographing people, and never photograph military, security or other sensitive installations.

Photography at historical and religious sites

Museums, palaces, mosques and archaeological sites can set their own rules for cameras, flash, tripods and commercial equipment. Ask at the entrance when restrictions are unclear. Major visitor sites such as Golestan Palace and Persepolis may apply site-specific controls.

Photographing people

Ask permission before taking a recognizable portrait, especially in private, religious or family settings. Respect a refusal without pressing for an explanation. The same principle applies when publishing identifiable photographs online.

Sensitive locations

Do not photograph military or security facilities, checkpoints or other locations where photography is prohibited. If a place appears sensitive or signage is unclear, put the camera away and ask an authorized local contact or site staff before shooting.

Professional photography

Commercial, documentary or professional productions may require permissions beyond those for ordinary tourist photography. Confirm requirements before arrival rather than assuming that a tourist entry status covers a professional shoot.

Drones

Drone use involves separate aviation, security and import considerations and should not be treated like ordinary photography. Do not bring or operate a drone based only on general travel information. Verify current permissions with the relevant Iranian authorities before travel.

Practical photography checklist

  • Check signs and ask staff before photographing inside attractions.
  • Ask before taking close or identifiable photographs of people.
  • Avoid military, security and other restricted locations.
  • Do not assume flash, tripods or professional equipment are permitted.
  • Check current travel conditions before departure in the Iran travel update.
