Navigate the Skies Safely and Legally in Iran

Iran, with its breathtaking landscapes and diverse geography, is a dream destination for drone enthusiasts looking to capture stunning aerial footage. From vast deserts to snowy mountains, the country is an incredible playground for drone photographers.

However, like many other countries, Iran has strict regulations that must be followed when flying drones. If you are planning to bring a drone in Iran, hereโ€™s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth and safe experience.

Yes, drones are allowed in Iran, but with strict regulations in place. The country’s drone policy aims to strike a balance between encouraging tourism and maintaining national security. Since 2024, drone use in Iran is regulated by the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran (CAOI). It stipulates that it is essential to obtain the necessary permits before flying a drone in the country.

Indeed, if your drone weighs more than 300 grams, a permit is required – this means that only lightweight drones, such as the DJI Spark, can be flown in Iran without authorization. Yet, even for smaller drones, general regulations still apply.

To bring a drone into Iran, youโ€™ll need permission from both the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces. For that, you’ll be required to specify the times and locations where you plan to fly the drone. Furthermore, youโ€™ll need to include specific details about your drone, such as its weight, maximum altitude, flight radius, and maximum flight time.

Once you have the necessary permits, youโ€™re free to explore Iranโ€™s natural beauty from the sky. However, there are still a few rules to follow:

  • Do not fly your drone higher than 50 meters.
  • You must fly your drone during daylight.
  • Fly only when visibility is more than 3 kilometers.
  • Drones are not allowed to fly over crowds.

Note that if youโ€™re willing to use your drone for commercial purposes, a specific permit is mandatory.

While you can enjoy the view from the sky in nature, there are certain areas where drones are strictly forbidden. Make sure to respect these restrictions even if you have a permit for your drone.

  • Keep your drone at least 250 meters away from private houses, schools, cinemas, or crowds.
  • Drones are not allowed within 2 kilometers of airports or in any areas where aircraft are operating.
  • Avoid flying near power plants, police stations, government buildings, or any areas that might raise security concerns.
  • Tehran and its entire metropolitan area are designated as no-fly zones for drones.
  • Shiraz, Isfahan and other major cities also have flying restrictions, so itโ€™s best to seek permissions from local authorities.
