History of Lar National Park
The name “Lar” frequently appears in historical texts. Since ancient times, Lar has been a retreat for various Iranian monarchs due to its refreshing climate. In the past, it was part of the historical Qasran district, a dependency of Ray City, and was referred to as “Lar Qasran.” However, in 1975, it was officially declared Lar National Park, gaining significant recognition.
In 1982, the protection level of the area was reduced, but in 1991, parts of it were re-designated as Lar National Park.
Flora and Fauna of Lar National Park
Due to its climate, Lar National Park is rich in biodiversity, featuring various plant and animal species. The presence of some rare species has led to increased protective measures, including the prohibition of hunting in specific areas.
Plant Species
Approximately 400 plant species, belonging to around 48 families, can be found in Lar National Park. Of these, 338 species are permanent residents, while the rest grow seasonally. Notably, about 35 species are native to the Iranian climate.
These plants include medicinal and vibrant flowers such as thyme, licorice, wild iris, chicory, fennel, and purple and yellow irises. Due to the park’s flower-rich meadows, beekeeping is common between early June and late September.
Animal Species
The park’s diverse climate and mountain ranges create suitable habitats for many species, including birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.
- Birds: Over 100 bird species, including partridges, eagles, cranes, flamingos, kestrels, and golden eagles.
- Mammals: Wild goats, sheep, rabbits, brown bears, leopards, wolves, foxes, and wild cats.
- Amphibians and Reptiles: Species like viper snakes, monitor lizards, turtles, and frogs.
- Fish: The Red-Spotted Trout is the rarest species found in the park’s rivers. This trout has two varieties: migratory and resident. Due to the construction of the Lar Dam, migratory trout no longer migrate to the Caspian Sea but instead to the Lar Lake.
Activities in Lar National Park
The park’s pristine landscapes offer numerous recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, and picnicking.
Hiking
With its mountainous terrain, Lar National Park is home to some of Iran’s famous peaks, including Mount Damavand, Div Asiab Mountain, and Kuh-e Yakh Kamar. These peaks are a haven for mountaineering enthusiasts.
Fishing
The park is ideal for fishing enthusiasts, particularly for those seeking trout. Fishing is allowed from early June to the end of September with a special permit from the environmental units of Qushkhaneh, Polour, and Delichai.
Cycling
Cycling tours are popular throughout the year, allowing cyclists to explore the park’s picturesque trails and mountain slopes.
Off-Roading
One of the most thrilling activities in Lar Plain is off-roading. However, participants must be cautious as off-roading can cause significant damage to the environment if not done properly. It is advised to use experienced drivers.
Picnicking and Photography
Lar National Park is perfect for relaxing, picnicking, and enjoying time with family. While open fires are prohibited, the scenic views of Mount Damavand and the Poppy Fields make it an ideal spot for nature photography.
Attractions Near Lar National Park
In addition to the natural beauty of Lar Plain, there are other natural and cultural attractions in the vicinity.

Lar Lake, formed by the Lar Dam in 1982, is one of the highest lakes in Iran, covering 29 square kilometers. It is fed by the Qezel Dareh, Sefid Ab, and Delichai rivers.
Lar’s Rivers and Waterfalls
Several rivers, including the Lar River, Div Asiab River, Sefid Ab, and Chahar Bareh, flow through the area, creating rich conditions for both plant and animal life. A stunning waterfall also cascades down from Damavand, adding to the region’s allure.
