Tehran Metro Guide: Maps, Lines & Tips for Tourists

Comprehensive Guide to Tehran Metro: Map, Lines, and Stations

Tehran Metro offers an efficient solution for navigating the city and avoiding traffic, ensuring a reliable timetable for daily commutes.

If you live in Tehran or have visited the capital, you’ve likely used one of its metro stations. As of 2024, the Tehran Metro operates seven active lines: six urban lines with two branches and one intercity line. Plans by the Metro Company aim to expand the network to 11 lines in the future.

The expanding Tehran Metro network can feel overwhelming for occasional riders. This guide by SURFIRAN provides comprehensive assistance for locating stations, navigating routes, and understanding train schedules.

Tehran Metro Map 2025

By downloading the high-resolution Tehran Metro map, you can easily locate each station along with clear directions for your journey.

Line 1

Line 1, marked in red, connects northern and southern Tehran, running from Tajrish to Kahrizak with 29 stations over a 36-kilometer stretch. The journey takes approximately 71 minutes. Since its opening in 2001, all 29 stations are now operational, with the northern terminal, Zafaraniyeh Station, under design. Line 1 intersects with six other lines.

Line 2

Tehranโ€™s Line 2 is the busiest route, linking the cityโ€™s west and east. Marked in dark blue, it spans 22 stations over 26 kilometers from Sadeghiyeh Square (which also connects to the Tehran-Karaj route) and takes around 45 minutes. Each station on Line 2 is operational, and the line intersects with six other lines. Opened in 1999, Line 2 is among Tehranโ€™s oldest routes.

Line 3

Highlighted in light blue, Line 3 covers 35 kilometers from the northeast to the south of Tehran. Out of its 28 stations, 25 are active, with an approximate travel time of 61 minutes. The line begins at Qaem Station in Qaem Town and ends at Azadegan Station, intersecting with four other lines.

Line 3’s northern terminal has two initial stations: Qaem and Bahonar, converging at Nobonyad Station. Stations Shahid Bahonar and Niavaran are still in the planning phase. The first stations on Line 3 were launched in 2012.

Line 4

Line 4, marked in yellow, runs east to west and was inaugurated in 2008. Near its western end, the Bimeh Station branches off toward Mehrabad Airport Terminals 1, 2, 4, and 6. The line intersects with seven other metro lines, terminating at Eram-e-Sabz Station, located along the Tehran-Karaj route.

Spanning 24 kilometers with 22 stations (20 of which are operational), this line has a travel time of about 46 minutes. Two stations remain under construction.

Line 5 (Intercity)

Line 5 is an intercity line, stretching from Sadeghiyeh Square in western Tehran to the Shahid Qassem Soleimani Station. Marked in green, it covers 42 kilometers with 13 stations and a 57-minute travel time. You may have seen this line along the Tehran-Qazvin highway.

Line 6

Line 6 connects northwest and southeast Tehran and appears in pink on the map. Of its 31 stations, 23 are operational across a 32-kilometer route, which takes 58 minutes. The line opened in 2017, with eastern and western segments linking Valiasr and Shahid Arman Ali Vardi (Kuhsar), as well as Dolatabad and Valiasr stations.

Line 7

With 22 stations (21 of which are active), Line 7 appears in purple and had a phased opening in 2017. However, due to safety concerns, the line briefly suspended operations later that year. The 27-kilometer route takes 46 minutes and intersects with five other lines. The under-construction Takhti Square Station is expected to open soon.

Parand City Extension (Line 1 Branch)

Opened in 2016, this line connects Shahid-Baqershahr to Imam Khomeini International Airport with five stations: Shahid, Baqershahr, Shahr-e-Aftab Exhibition, Vavan, Imam Khomeini Airport, and Parand City. It spans 49 kilometers and takes about 55 minutes.

Mehrabad Airport Extension (Line 4 Branch)

This branch extends from Bimeh Station to Terminals 1, 2, 4, and 6 of Mehrabad Airport, covering 2 kilometers in approximately four minutes.

Types and Prices of Metro Tickets

Tehran’s metro system has evolved from paper tickets in 1998 to smart cards and QR-coded tickets today. Smart cards offer distance-based pricing, which provides a refund at the exit gate if the maximum distance isnโ€™t traveled. They are widely used across the metro and BRT bus networks, and since 2015, QR-coded magnetic tickets have become a popular option for seamless, efficient travel.

Special Group Metro Cards

These cards are available for students, veterans, families of martyrs, and social welfare recipients, with a one-time issuance fee of 15,000 Toman. The cards are valid for one year and can be renewed annually at the Tehran Electronic Services Office.
