Where History and Beauty Converge

History of Niavaran Complex
The site began as a Qajar royal summer retreat. Fath-Ali Shah ordered a garden residence in the Niavaran area, and later rulers added new buildings. Naser al-Din Shah commissioned Sahebqaraniyeh Palace, while the Ahmad Shahi Pavilion was built late in the Qajar period. During the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the modern Niavaran Palace became a residence for the royal family.

What to See
Niavaran Palace

The modern palace combines contemporary design with Iranian decorative elements. Its preserved interiors, furnishings and artworks provide a view of royal life during the final decades of the Pahlavi period.
Sahebqaraniyeh Palace

Built for Naser al-Din Shah, Sahebqaraniyeh is one of the complex’s principal Qajar buildings. Its later uses included serving as Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s office. Access to individual buildings can change during restoration work, so check current conditions before visiting.
Ahmad Shahi Pavilion

This two-storey pavilion dates from the late Qajar period and was built for Ahmad Shah. Its brick exterior and compact scale contrast with the larger palaces around it.
Jahan Nama Museum

The museum displays works and objects collected from different periods and regions. It adds an art-focused stop to a visit otherwise centered on palace architecture and royal history.
Gardens and Visitor Planning

The landscaped grounds connect the complex’s museums and historic buildings. Allow several hours if you plan to see multiple museums. Opening hours, ticketing and access to individual buildings can change, especially during restoration or official closures.

The complex is near Niavaran Square in northern Tehran. For current museum information, consult the official Niavaran Complex website. You can also compare it with the nearby Sa’dabad Palace Complex and explore our Tehran travel guide.
