The Trans-Iranian Railway Experience
The Trans-Iranian Railway is one of Iran’s most ambitious engineering achievements. Its northern section winds from the plains near Tehran into the Alborz Mountains, passing tunnels, bridges and changing landscapes. This article describes the railway’s history and an earlier Alborz day-trip itinerary; it is not a current departure announcement.

Why the Trans-Iranian Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Built between 1927 and 1938, the 1,394-kilometre Trans-Iranian Railway links the Caspian Sea region with the Persian Gulf. UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List in 2021, recognising the scale of its engineering and the way it crosses mountain ranges, forests, highlands and plains. According to UNESCO’s official site record, the historic route includes 174 large bridges, 186 smaller bridges and 224 tunnels, including 11 spiral tunnels.
The project was financed through national taxes and built with the participation of contractors from several countries. It remains a notable example of early twentieth-century railway construction in difficult terrain.

The Alborz mountain section
An excursion north from Tehran can reveal the line’s most dramatic scenery. The historical route described here passed through Garmsar, Firuzkuh, Gaduk and Veresk before continuing towards Savadkuh. Travellers encounter steep valleys, masonry viaducts and mountain tunnels along this corridor. The celebrated Veresk Bridge is one of the landmarks associated with the northern railway.
The route is part of a larger railway network. A short sightseeing trip through the Alborz is not the same as travelling the full UNESCO-listed line from the Caspian region to the Persian Gulf. For additional context, see our guide to scenic Trans-Iranian Railway routes.
A look back at the railway excursion
The earlier SURFIRAN itinerary described an early departure from Tehran, sightseeing stops focused on bridges and railway architecture, and an evening return. It also mentioned meals, a bilingual guide and a promotional complimentary ticket. Those details belong to the historical offer and should not be treated as current prices, inclusions or availability.

Planning a train journey in Iran
Train services, charter excursions, access to stops and operating conditions can change. Before making plans, confirm the route, departure station, timetable, accessibility and any necessary travel permissions with the operator. Mountain weather may affect access and schedules, especially in winter.
For regular passenger trains, compare current routes and ticket options on OrientTrips’ Iran train booking page. An ordinary intercity ticket does not necessarily include the scenic stops or guided access described in this archived excursion. Check the exact train, stations and operator conditions before booking.

it seems to be a good tour.
