Rasht Bazaar: Open-Air Market & Food Culture in Gilan
Rasht Grand Bazaar is an open-air market in the heart of Rasht, the capital of Gilan Province. Its food stalls, small shops and historic trading spaces offer a close look at everyday life in northern Iran.
Set within the city’s historic center, the bazaar has long served farmers, fishmongers and traders from across Gilan. Unlike Iran’s better-known covered bazaars, much of Rasht’s market unfolds beneath the open sky.

Inside Rasht Grand Bazaar

Fresh herbs, vegetables, fish and the voices of vendors make this a particularly engaging stop for travelers interested in local food culture. The atmosphere is part of the experience, whether or not you plan to shop.
The market includes open squares, lanes and historic caravanserais. Its trading history stretches back centuries, while several surviving structures reflect later periods. Browse more of the region through our Gilan stories.
Rasht’s roofless lanes offer a striking contrast to the vaulted interiors of other Iranian markets, such as Arak Bazaar. Traders arrange their produce along streets and around busy gathering points.
Depending on the season, stalls may sell leafy greens, citrus fruit, olives, rice, fish, pickles and local dairy products. Produce varies, and a market stall’s appearance alone does not establish whether its goods are certified organic.
Rasht lies close to the Caspian Sea and the agricultural landscapes of Gilan. This setting helps explain the prominence of fish, rice and fresh herbs in the local food culture. See our Rasht travel guide for more context.
Take time to observe the stalls, ask permission before photographing people and check prices before buying. Rasht has belonged to UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for gastronomy since 2015; the bazaar offers a vivid introduction to the ingredients behind that recognition.

Visiting the market
A walk through Rasht Bazaar complements a wider visit to Gilan Province. Its open-air layout, seasonal foods and everyday exchanges are the attraction, not a fixed itinerary or guaranteed selection of products.
