Travel Itinerary

Arrive at Baghdad International Airport and meet your SURFIRAN guide, who escorts you to your hotel. After settling in and resting, enjoy an evening walk along Abu Nuwas Street, where Baghdadis gather by the Tigris. This riverside stroll offers your first immersive impression of Baghdad’s resilience, energy, and warm hospitality.

Overnight in Baghdad.

Step into the world-renowned Iraq Museum, with galleries displaying treasures of Sumer, Babylon, and Assyria. Wander down Al-Mutanabbi Street, alive with booksellers, poets, and cafés, and explore the 13th-century Mustansiriya Madrasa. Pause at Freedom Monument and the soaring Martyrs’ Monument, reflecting Iraq’s turbulent yet resilient history, offering insight into the nation’s struggles and spirit.

Overnight in Baghdad.

Journey north to Samarra, once the Abbasid capital and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand in awe of the Great Mosque and climb the iconic spiral Malwiya Minaret for sweeping views. Explore Abbasid palaces and archaeological remains, gaining insight into the city’s golden age, before returning to Baghdad in the evening.

Overnight in Baghdad.

Drive south into Babil Province to walk the ruins of Babylon, evoking Nebuchadnezzar’s reign. Trace the Processional Way, view the Lion of Babylon, and imagine the legendary Hanging Gardens. Continue to Hillah for the night.

Overnight in Hillah or Karbala.

Join pilgrims at the resplendent Imam Husayn Shrine and neighboring Al-Abbas Shrine, where gilded domes and mirrored halls shimmer with devotion. Learn how the martyrdom of Husayn shaped Shia identity, inspiring centuries of faith, mourning rituals, and collective memory that still resonate profoundly across Iraq and the wider Shia world.

Overnight in Karbala.

Travel to Najaf, home to the dazzling Imam Ali Shrine, a spiritual heart of Shia Islam. Walk the vast Wadi al-Salam Cemetery, believed to hold millions of graves across centuries. Nearby, step into Kufa Mosque, where the air is filled with echoes of Imam Ali’s sermons, adding profound depth to this day’s journey.

Overnight in Najaf.

Travel southward to Ur, the ancient city and traditional birthplace of Abraham, where the massive Ziggurat of Ur rises dramatically from the Mesopotamian plain. Continue onward to Nasiriyah, a bustling southern city alive with markets, lively bazaars, and cafés, offering a glimpse into the daily rhythm of life in Iraq’s deep south.

Overnight in Nasiriyah.

Cruise through the Mesopotamian Marshes, where reeds shimmer beneath the sun and water buffalo wade peacefully. Visit a traditional reed house (mudhif), meet the Marsh Arabs, and experience firsthand a resilient lifestyle preserved for millennia in this UNESCO-listed ecosystem, often linked to humanity’s earliest stories of Eden.

Overnight in Nasiriyah.

Drive to Basra, Iraq’s southern maritime hub. Visit the excellent Basra Museum, set in Saddam’s former palace, with artifacts spanning Mesopotamian civilizations. Stroll along the Shatt al-Arab Waterway, where date palms shade Ottoman canals and colonial mansions, capturing the historic character of this strategic river port that once connected Iraq to the Persian Gulf.

Overnight in Basra.

Morning flight returns you to Baghdad, where your guide meets you at the airport and escorts you back to the hotel. In the afternoon, perhaps visit the golden‑domed Kadhimiya Shrine, wander Baghdad’s markets, or relax in Zawra Park, absorbing the city’s vibrant daily rhythm.

Overnight in Baghdad.

Fly north to Erbil, capital of Kurdistan, where ancient history and modern vibrancy meet. Ascend the UNESCO-listed Erbil Citadel, continuously inhabited for more than 6,000 years, then wander the bustling bazaar as evening descends, savoring the city’s lively atmosphere, fragrant spice stalls, and warm Kurdish hospitality.

Overnight in Erbil.

Journey into the hills to the sacred valley of Lalish, heart of the Yezidi faith. Explore the temple of Sheikh Adi, learning ancient traditions and rituals. Continue to Duhok, framed by rugged mountains, bustling bazaars, and leafy parks, where Kurdish hospitality and mountain scenery combine to enrich the day’s experience.

Overnight in Duhok.

Travel the spectacular Hamilton Road, engineered through dramatic canyons and cascading waterfalls. Pause at panoramic viewpoints before reaching Rawanduz, perched high above the Safin Gorge, offering breathtaking scenery and mountain air, before returning to Erbil.

Overnight in Erbil.

Drive to Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan’s cultural and intellectual hub. Visit Amna Suraka (Red Security Museum), a former intelligence prison transformed into a powerful memorial. Later, browse lively bazaars and cafés, and admire the surrounding mountain scenery that frames the city with beauty and depth.

Overnight in Sulaymaniyah.

Transfer to Sulaymaniyah Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you vivid impressions of Mesopotamia’s living history, timeless landscapes, sacred shrines, and warm encounters that defined this journey. Reflect on Iraq’s resilience and cultural richness as you bid farewell to a land that shaped civilization and offered unforgettable experiences. Safe onward travels with SURFIRAN.

Going to Iran was for me and my friend a long term project. We booked a luxury train trip in 2019 but unfortunately the tour was canceled because of covid. Surfiran offered us a 9-day tour this year and Saye cooperated with us wonderfully in preparing our trip. Read More

All arranged efficiently

Everything was arranged very efficiently. Nothing went wrong. Our guide, Mostafa Farhadi, was remarkable. Not only was he a brilliant driver, but his knowledge of the culture, history and contemporary life of Iran was amazing. He also had superb contacts in all the places we visited.
