Tughrul Tower is a 12th-century Seljuk monument in Rey, south of central Tehran. The cylindrical brick tower is one of the most recognizable surviving landmarks of historic Rey and is traditionally identified as the mausoleum of Tughril Beg, founder of the Seljuk dynasty.

Tughrul Tower at a Glance
The monument stands about 20 meters high and is built almost entirely of brick. Its exterior is shaped by 24 projecting ribs, which create strong vertical shadows and give the tower its distinctive profile. The original conical dome no longer survives, so the structure seen today is lower than it would have appeared in the medieval period.
History and Architecture
Architectural heritage records date the tower to the 12th century and identify its style as Seljuk. The monument is commonly associated with Tughril I, who died in Rey in 1063. The attribution has long been part of the site’s historical identity, although details surrounding medieval burials at the monument should be treated cautiously.
The tower’s design is notable for its restrained brickwork and strongly articulated exterior. The repeated ribs break up the circular mass and emphasize height, while the thick masonry reflects the engineering traditions used for monumental tomb towers in medieval Iran.
The upper section has undergone restoration over time. Naser al-Din Shah ordered repairs in the Qajar period when parts of the structure were deteriorating. The surviving tower remains an important example of Seljuk architecture in the historic city of Rey.
