Nakhl-Gardani Ritual In Zarch And Ashkezar During Ashura

Nakhl-gardani is a Shia mourning ritual performed during Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram. In Yazd Province, communities carry a decorated wooden structure, or nakhl, as a symbolic bier commemorating Imam Husayn ibn Ali, who was killed at Karbala in 680 CE.

The nakhl is often decorated with cloth, mirrors and other symbolic objects. Carrying it is a communal act of remembrance. For a detailed historical account, see Encyclopaedia Iranica’s study of the nakhl.

Visitors to Yazd during Muharram may encounter public mourning ceremonies. These are religious observances rather than staged tourist attractions. Dress respectfully, keep a considerate distance and ask permission before photographing participants.

The Meaning of the Nakhl

According to Encyclopaedia Iranica, the wooden nakhl represents a ceremonial bier. In different communities it may be decorated with black and green fabrics, mirrors and symbolic objects. The structure is carried through public spaces by groups of mourners, making collective participation central to the ritual.
