History of Gahar Lake Lorestan
Foreign tourists often refer to Gahar Lake as “Iran’s Lake,” a name made popular by the English explorer Isabella Lucy Bishop in 1890, who extensively explored the area. However, historical records attribute the discovery of Gahar Lake to Austrian geologist A. Rodler in 1888. The lake is also known among Europeans simply as “Lake Iran” and is nicknamed “Tourism Jewel of Oshtorankuh” due to its popularity.

Gahar Lake is divided into two main parts: the larger Gahar (Kaleh Gahar) and the smaller Gahar (Kareh Gahar). The larger lake covers about 85 hectares with a depth of up to 30 meters, while the smaller lake lies just two kilometers away, spanning approximately 5 hectares with a depth of 2 meters. These lakes are fed by mountain springs, ensuring their water remains crystal clear and teeming with life.
