Tabriz Airport, officially known as Shahid Madani International Airport, is one of Iran’s premier airports. Due to its geographical location, it serves as a major air border and a vital air route between Iran and Europe, making it one of the most important airports in the country. Spanning 420 hectares, this airport supports approximately 14,200 flights annually. In the latest statistics from 2015, the airport ranked eighth in Iran, handling 1.7 million passengers annually.

History of Tabriz Airport

The construction of Tabriz Airport dates back to 1950, located in the northwest of Tabriz. Initially, it had only a dirt runway. Over time, in 1956, the airport was equipped with navigational equipment. After developing various buildings, it was officially established as Tabriz Airport in 1959. Over time, the number of flights to various domestic and international cities increased, and now it covers almost all major destinations.

The airport is connected to the west by the Tabriz-Soufian Road, to the north and east by the Second Trade Base, and to the south by Shahid Babaei Boulevard. If you have booked your plane ticket, you should plan your transportation from the airport to the city center. If traveling with family, it’s best to use a taxi. Otherwise, Tabriz’s bus and metro systems are more economical options.

Access to Shahid Madani International Airport by Metro

From 06:30 to 20:00, you can take Metro Line 4 from the airport to the city center. Although a dedicated station has not yet been built at the airport, the last station on Line 4 is at Azarbaijan Square, near the airport.

Access to Tabriz Airport by Bus

You can use the special airport bus line to travel between Tabriz Bazaar and the airport. The fare for intra-city buses in Tabriz is 1,300 Tomans with an electronic card and 2,000 Tomans if paid in cash.

To get there, head from the city center towards the Airport Square, then onto Shahid Babaei Boulevard. After passing Azarbaijan Square, continue on this boulevard towards Chay Kenar Street. This route takes about 20 minutes by taxi.
